"David Maclean has been awarded a peerage."

With him being a former Tory Party Chief Whip this wouldn't ordinarily be surprising, but in this case I was surprised because of Maclean's declining health due to his multiple sclerosis.

How active can he realistically be - now and in the future? After all, his health was the reason for retiring from the Commons.

"...although it was like someone throwing a bucket of water over you repeatedly."

I did most of my Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions in the Lakes, we went in the summer and usually had nice weather.

However, I did the gold award around the Dartmoor area, again in summer (passing Princetown and Dartmoor Prison, which all looked thoroughly depressing), but my goodness the terrain and weather down there was ten times worse than anything I experienced up here.

I think I noticed this before,
but pleased to see that the old County town of Appleby in Westmorland is in this seat,
and not in the Lib Dem seat.

Rory Stewart was guest speaker at the annual dinner of the Richmond Park Conservatives, last night.
A very interesting character.
He's certainly done something before politics.

I did go to Penrith in May 2007, as it was a base for a trip to Ullswater. Spectacular scenery, although it was like someone throwing a bucket of water over you repeatedly.
Penrith is a pleasant town.

Have they also got Local Elections on the same day?

If they do have two elections running on the same day they need to give serious consideration to having two separate ballot boxes. The ballot papers should be different colours.

'Is it counting on the night.'

To my knowledge, most all of the Scottish constituencies count on the night, with the possible exception of seats like Orkney, the Western Isles etc. Apparently all the NI constituencies will be counting on the night, unlike in previous years when they counted on the Friday afternoon.
