"I question why such a silly name. To give the seat the names of two towns is radical but three….."

It seems to be the standard tactic of the Scottish boundary commissioners, Pete.

Labour have selected Michael McCann, councillor for East Kilbride West ward on South Lanarkshire council.
He was the favourite to get it even before the MP announced his retirement.
I didn't even realize the selection took place, but it was mentioned in a BBC website piece about Griffiths standing down in Edinburgh

East Kilbride and Strathaven was East Kilbride District Council which was identical to the 1983 - 2005 constituency. Lesmahago was previously in Clydesdale but it might have been in the original 1974 -1983 East Kilbride.

Any news on Labour selection? Labour seem to be very slow at selecting candidate in Scottish labour seats for some reason

Given my post of 23rd May, showing the 1983 result for this seat as a three way marginal (Lab/ SDP/ Con), its surprising that this seat is so safe now for Labour. When you consider the SNP support in Cumbernauld and the West Lothian new towns, I don't understand why Labour should be so secure here now.

The point about electors moving here from Glasgow was very evident when the Lanark constituency was partitioned in 1974 to form this seat.

Maurice Millar (MP for Glasgow Kelvingrove) inherited this seat when his seat was largely merged (with the exception of the western half of the city central that joined Glasgow Central) with the whole of Neil Carmichaels Glasgow Woodside to form a seat named 'Glasgow Kelvingrove'

Perhaps Maurice Millar continued to represent 100's of his old constituents.

The strength of the SNP in Cumbernauld is diluted by its inclusion with Kilsyth since 1983, then also the more Labour parts of East Dunbartonshire since 2005.

The big population surge in EK was during the early 'seventies. And yes, most incomers originated in Glasgow, or even stronger Labour areas like Motherwell.

As far as the comparison with other new towns goes, I'd suggest the odd man out here is Cumbernauld, as it's the only urban SNP stonghold within the wider Glasgow conurbation.
