Boundary Changes: Antrim East is pushed outwards slightly as the Belfast seats expand, losing Cloughfern ward to Belfast North and gaining Glenaan, Glenariff and Glundun.

Profile: Covers Carrickfergus, Larne and parts of Newtownabbey. Antrim East stretches up the eastern coast of Northern Ireland north of Belfast (it narrowly escaped being transformed into the even more salamandery ‘Antrim Coast and Glens’ at the boundary review). The southern part is Belfast commuter belt with the sprawl of Belfast’s own outskirts like Jordanstown, then Carrickfergus and Whitehead which have become part of Belfast’s commuter orbit. North of that the seat becomes far more rural, apart from the ferry port of Larne.

Antrim East is overwhelmingly protestant. The minority catholic population is concentrated in the Belfast suburbs and around the University of Ulster at Jordanstown and in Larne. It is a safely unionist seat, the contest is between the DUP and UUP and in 2005 it fell to the DUP on a 11.7% swing. Returns 3 DUP, 2 UUP and 1 Alliance to the assembly.
