He had quite high majorities here during the time he was MP (1979-1992)- In 1979 and 1983. The problems for Speller began in 1987, as he had appeared to have taken North Devon for granted- This level of complacency may well have contributed to his eventual defeat in 1992 at the hands of the incumbent of nearly 21 years standing Sir Nicholas Harvey.
