Oh I really hope not! How depressing would that be!
I suspect Fiona Bruce will be in the frame as she failed to get the Macclesfield nomination
I would add Col Bob Stewart to that list, as he was unsuccessful in Sleaford & North Hykeham
Bob Stewart would be more apt for a Cheshire seat. I hope his namesake and fellow former army officer Rory Stewart will get a seat too. Both would make very worthwhile additions to the commons.
I agree, Rory Stewart’s CV is quite an amazing read, and wouldn’t be surprised if he got Penrith & The Border at the weekend
The Conservatives select on 28th November via an Open Primary – a shortlist has been drawn up but I don’t know who is on it, though wpould be very surprised if Fiona Bruce and Bob Stewart were omitted
I feel a bit sorry for Fiona Bruce. She’s been trying for most of the vacant Tory seat in the north of England but has failed to be selected.
She must be very fed up by now!!!!
I agree – she has got to the final of Skipton & Ripon, Penrith & The Border and Macclesfield – this is probably her last realistic chance before the next election
Yes Matt, in the North, this is probably her last chance before the next Election. However, she have a chance if she’s prepared to up sticks and move down South to try and be selected for a safe Tory seat.
I think 2 seats showed Lab to Con swings in 1997: Bradford West and Bethnal Green & Bow.
oh, sorry, wrong post. I thought I was in Bromsgrove thread.
If you can delate those comments, feel free to do it
You got my hopes up Andrea – I thought you had the Conservative shortlist!
Matt, we have the shortlist now
Simon Baynes
Fiona Bruce
Janet Clowes
Matthew Hancock
Eveleigh Moore Dutton
Merryn Myatt
Go to ConHome for full biographies of the final 6.
Fiona Bruce is here as predicted, but no Bob Strewart
Andrea – Thanks for the list. Bob Stewart is in the final in Beckenham that’s why he’s not here.
Matt – See I told Matt Hancock (one of Osborne’s econmic advisors) was in the running for this seat. From what I read in The Telegraoh, he’s got the full support of Osborne and Conservative HQ and wouldn’t be surprised if he won.
Interesting lineup – some surprisingly positive comments from ConHome’s notoriously crabby posters as well!
As for Matt Hancock, I wonder if being George Osborne’s SPAD will count against him, as there does seem to be an anti-CCHQ mood in the local parties.
Per conhome Fiona Bruce was selected on the first ballot.
Someone mentioned on here that the Selection was today (Saturday 28th November). Does anyone know the result?
Thanks Dave.
Very good choice IMHO – she has been persistant and tenacious in trying to get selected, and has been rewarded
Interesting. An anti-abortion lady to replace an anti-abortion retiring lady. A comment on ConHome says the open meeting was full of a ‘New Life church’ congregation. Though also interesting that Boy George’s asst wasn’t selected. Cheshire Religious Right 1 Bullingdon Club Reserves 0
And Fiona Bruce only got in here after applying for approximately 271 other seats!
Fiona Bruce strikes me as a very genuine person and I am extremely confident that she will ensure this seat remains safely Conservative in the years to come.
Don’t forget, this is a seat which the Lib Dems have always had their eyes on. With Fiona Bruce as MP, it looks like they are going to be dissapointed yet again.
Just seen your comment Shaun. I think in reality any threat to the Tories here evaporated as soon as Labour gained second place. Even the less prosperous parts of Congleton itself, in which one could include Buglawton, have moved strongly in a Conservative direction for some little while now and the Tories now are completely safe. The LDs flattered to deceive here.

Hi. I’m Adam Parton and I’m standing as an independent in Congleton. I just thought I give you a few details about myself as I seem to be a bit short of details on this page. I am a licensee by trade and I live in Alsager with my wife Donna and my two daughters. If you need any more info please have a look at my web page or get in touch ([email protected])

Squeeze on here. Tories by 6,000 or so.
Which constituencies included Congleton from 1885 to 1983?
It was in Macclesfield before 1983. As usual, however, I am unable to go back as far as Pete Whitehead.
It was indeed all the way back to 1885
Not a great Tory result here, as in neighbouring Macclesfield. Loss of the Wintertons’ personal vote?
More probably a reaction against the Wintertons expenses carrying over to the new candidate.
I wouldn’t have thought that was the reason… it didn’t really happen in other seats where MPs retired did it?
I think there will have been the loss of a personal vote (particularly in Macclesfield, Sir Nicholas Winterton having been MP there for 39 years).
But this result in Congleton is sort of a return to the norm. Labour some way back in third. The Lib Dems seemingly poised to make a breakthrough.
The Tory vote share is a little lower than in the ’80s / early ’90s, but even then it only ever got as high as 49%.
The Lib Dem share is pretty much where it was during that time. Labour is at the lower end of its performances from that era.
It’s UKIP which has dented the Tory vote here (as in other seats of course).
If Ann Winterton had stood then there may not have been a UKIP candidate and the Tory vote share may have got back to the 48 / 49% seen 20-odd years ago.
This seat should remain in Tory hands, but Fiona Bruce will need to prove herself a diligent MP.
Does anyone know which candidate came second here in the Tory Selection Election. Was it Matthew Hancock (now MP for West Suffolk)?
Christian:

In 2001, the Labour Party came into second place here for the first time ever. There were other seats that saw this pattern repeated, e.g. Bournemouth East, Woodspring and Poole to name a few.
I’m pretty sure Labour was 2nd in Bournemouth West, not East, in 2001. In either case however Labour had been second before, as they had in Poole.
The same thing happened in a few Scottish seats as well.
I think Sandbach in this seat was in Crewe all the way up to 1983
