Category: Safe Conservative seat

Geography: West Midlands, Shropshire. Part of Telford and Wrekin council area and part of the Shropshire council area.

Main population centres: Donnington, Wellington, Newport, Shifnal, Albrighton.

Profile: A largely rural dormitory seat in North East Shropshire - the name the Wrekin refers to a large volcanic hill on the border between Shrewbury & Atcham and Telford and Wrekin, the site of an ancient hill fort. Prior to 1997 the Wrekin covered Telford, with the creation of the Telford consituency the Wrekin is now the rural hinterland of Telford, including the northernmost suburbs of Telford such as Donnington and the town of Wellington, plus the town of Newport to the north, Shifnal to the east and the large dormitory village of Albrighton. The seat has a large agriculture sector and is home to Harper Agricultural University College. There is also a substantial military presence in the area, with RAF Cosford situated near Albrighton.

Politics: Most of the seat is traditional Tory territory, but there is a strong Labour vote in areas like Donnington and Hadley which saw the seat return a Labour MP from 1997 until 2005.
