    Brent Central
    Brentford & Isleworth
    Keighley
    Harrow East
    Ealing Central & Acton
    Carmarthen East & Dinefwr
    Cleethorpes
    Ilford North
    Brigg & Goole

Yorkshire and London are the regions behind in the process judging by the list.

  3. ED-v- UNITE
It is ironic that Ed Milliband should criticise the Unite Union for practices that he himself condones within the party. Last Year, West Midlands Labour Party selected their choice for Yardley constituency Parliamentary candidate Jess Phillips and began a not-so discrete program of promoting her as the Labour Party candidate. She appeared in local papers as such and when it came to the process of so called fair, open and transparent selection procedure this was far from the truth. Ms Phillips produced a beautiful, very slick and professional leaflet that was distributed to the Labour party members of the Yardley Constituency. It was emblazoned with the party logo and format, that one ex-councillor stated that it had “been produced by the Labour Party”, other councillors had been told who to “vote for” even the final vote was ridiculous in the extent of the final result in favour of Ms Phillips. The support of these tactics (considered unfair, discriminatory (race/disability) and intimidatory to candidates living within the constituency went as high as the Director of Audit and Risk Management.
Throughout Birmingham, partners and family members of existing councillors have been placed in key seats to maximise the family kitty? or protect the stronghold on free voiced opinion? In one key seat a councillor was making suggestions about ignoring the all women shortlist procedure in foavour for a popular Lib-Dem who was out of favour with John Hemming MP.
What about the electorate? or the ordinary Labour Party member? They are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the returned Labour administration who are currently hiding behind repeated series of consultations, conversations and dialogues.
PS The Jess Phillips matter will go through the courts

  4. Jamie Hanley has been selected in Pudsey.

  5. St Albans: Kerry Pollard
Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire: Delyth Evans
    Argyll & Bute: Mary Galbraith
    Pudsey: Jamie Hanley

Elmet & Rothwell is selecting right now.

  6. Veronica King won Elmet selection.

Running total of Unite backed candidates

    15 won
    19 lost
    6 to go

  7. Wasn’t Kerry Pollard the St Albans MP in the past?

  8. Yes, elected in 1997 and lost in 2005. I believe he is around 70 year old.

  9. Born in 1944.

  10. Pendle: Azhar Ali

  11. 68 out of 145 Labour candidates selected so far are women = 46.9%. (The overall figure at the moment is 31.6%: 113 / 358).

  12. Mary Galbraith selected in Argyll & Bute.

  13. Ruth Cadbury selected in Brentford and Isleworth.

  14. No surprise there, she was clearly the front-runner.

  15. Lesley Brennan in Dundee East.

  16. Tom Ebbutt selected in Bromsgrove.

  17. Rupa Huq selected in Ealing Central and Acton.

    Paula Sherriff selected in Dewsbury.

Cheryl Pidgeon selected in South Derbyshire.

  18. Also

Gower: Liz Evans (actually, I don’t know who she is)
    Rochester and Strood: Naushabah Khan
    Putney: Sheila Boswell (Wandsworth Cllr)

  19. I think Labour now has a complete set of candidates for the 8 Kent seats they previously held (Rochester and Strood being created from the old Medway seat). Only two of them being on the target list.

  20. Couple of selections today:

John Turnbull in Shrewsbury & Atcham.

Dr Matt Lamb in Wyre Forest.

  21. West Dorset, Labour selection: Rachel Rogers.

  22. Basingstoke: Paul Harvey
    Christchurch: Andrew Satherley
    Devon North: Mark Cann
    Kingston & Surbiton: Lee Godfrey
    Solihull: Nigel Knowles
    Tiverton & Honiton: Caroline Kolek

  23. John Grogan selected for Keighley.

  24. Nigel Knowles is a perennial candidate. I think he’s been standing since the 80s.

  25. The 70s actually!

Why does he keep on standing in different totally unwinnable seats in each election.

Ludlow (2005), Ludlow (2001), Hastings (1983 – v. unwinnable at that election), Bodmin (1979), Worcestershire South (1992) and Wiltshire North (1997).

Not even come 2nd once – a record he will almost certainly maintain in 2015 to make it 36 years.

Is there a less successful candidate for one of the three main parties?

  26. Why didn’t Labour place Bradford West on its target list? I’m not sure if it was some massive oversight or another reason. It’s just ridiculous how very quiet they’ve become about that seat after “you-know-who” won the by-election. They’ve made it clear that they’re targeting Brighton Pavilion which is held by a very good and principled MP (someone I rate above many Labour members even if I don’t agree with all Green policies), yet say nothing about unseating one of the most vile MPs around.

As for the remaining selections in the 107 seats, Labour seems to have done nearly all of them. Kingswood, Brent Central, Bradford East, Cleethorpes and Na h-Eileanan an Iar (still can’t pronounce that) remain. Is Filton and Bradley Stoke on the list? Since Corby isn’t a target now, one would think that just made it onto the list.

  27. I don’t think Western Isles or Filton&Bradley Stoke are on Labour’s list. The former is number 99 on the neutral target list, compiled according to marginality.

  28. When Galloway was fully engaged in being MP for Bradford W, there was at first no sign that there was any likelihood of being thrown out of the very large majority he’d gained in the by-election. It’s only subsequently that relations with the local Respect councillors & activists were ruined, and it became clear that he is longer interested in Bradford & wants to be Mayor of London. This now makes a Labour regain extremely likely, even if he stands again, but perhaps the target list hasn’t been updated yet. There’s no doubt that the party will be working pretty hard in the seat, though they also have work to do in Bradford E & Keighley within the city boundaries.

  29. Funny that Barnaby – I recall you telling me I was wrong that Labour were almost certainly going to win back Bradford West.

  30. I imagine de-facto it will be a target regardless of whether it is on lists or not. I think it will be a pretty easy gain tbh, as will Bradford East.

Keighley is where the troops should be sent. The tories should also be able to really target the seat as nowhere in N Yorkshire is particularly marginal except Harrogate, and I would be surprised if we weren’t pretty safe there in 2015.

  31. Stockton South is closer to many parts of North Yorkshire than Keighley is, also it is much more marginal. Also the Tories will have to win Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland to have any realistic chance of an overall majority so they will have to do a lot of work there. My hunch is that Keighley will be a Con hold.

  32. Yes I’ll give you that one HH. Even with my extreme dislike of Galloway, I didn’t realise he’d abandon that particular ship quite as quickly as he did.

  33. Sam Gould selected as Labour candidate for Romford.

  34. Bath: Olly Middleton
    Hexham: Liam Carr
Cities of London & Westminster: Nik Slingsby

  35. Matthew Pennycook selected for Greenwich and Woolwich.

  36. Twickenham: Nick Grant.

  37. Is Sam Gould any relation of Brian Gould, MP for Southampton Test Oct 1974 – 1979 and Dagenham 1983 to 1992/1997 by election?

  38. Gould’s approach to economics – perhaps a precursor of “Blue Labour” – is certainly very much back in fashion now, having been marginalised for 15 years after Blair became leader

  39. @HH

Ironically, it’s another Dagenham MP in John Crudass that has advanced Blue Labour into the way it has done today

  40. Archie Dryburgh has apparently been selected as Labour candidate for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale & Tweeddale.

  41. Siobhan Tate selected in Carshalton & Wallington, and Mark Lazarowicz reselected in Edinburgh North & Leith.

Those two selections means Labour has now reached 40% of total selections for 2015, assuming they don’t stand in Northern Ireland, 253 out of 632 or 631 (depending on the situation in Buckingham).

  42. The chances for ambitious Labour candidates looking for a safe or winnable seat in 2015 seem to be diminishing fast as there have been relatively few Labour retirements so far, and the party has now selected for most of it’s target seats.

Then again, there is no better example than Tony Blair for sneaking in at the last minute in 1983. But these days when a last minute retirement is announced the successful candidate is almost certain to be a parachutist favoured by Labour HQ.

  43. Richmond Park has selected Sachin Patel.

  44. Not a winnable seat for Labour though is it Barnaby?

2015 doesn’t look like a good election for new Labour candidates hoping to inherit a safe seat, quite likely due to all the retirements at the end of the 2005 parliament?

  45. On the contrary, there are large numbers of Labour MPs overdue for retirement.

About half of current Tory MPs were first elected in 2010 so there are far fewer Tory retirements due.

  46. Then many Labour MPs thought to be due for retirement in 2015 must be hoping to soldier on, or will be announcing their retirement at the last minute allowing Labour HQ to drop in a favoured parachutist?

  47. Hard to say. I think there will be quite a few more retirements by the time of the election and the national party often encourages potential retirees to hang on as long as possible before announcing, giving opportunity to parachute in favoured candidates, and perhaps offering a peerage as an inducement.

On the other hand it’s likely Labour will be in government after 2015 in some form or another so some MPs due for retirement might decide to stand for one more term in the hope that they might be called up to serve in government. Certainly Miliband will have to bring some experience into the government as his shadow team is currently too lightweight and inexperienced.

  48. On the contrary James – Labour will take the seat with stupendous momentum 🙂

  49. Couple of selections over the weekend:

    Dawn Butler in Brent Central
    Jo McCarron in Kingswood

  50. Labour NEC Organization subcommittee met today…

    Aberdeen North: Open shortlist
    Glenrothes: AWS
    Stoke North: AWS
    Blackburn: AWS
    St Helens South: AWS
    Dulwich: AWS
    Aberavon: Open

I got my prediction wrong..I thought one between Blackburn and St Helens would have open Open
