  7. Or Bob, even

  8. I am male and have no interest in being MP for Wirral West. Christine Spriggs has NOT been selected.

  9. NEC decided for AWS in Falkirk, Gower and Southampton Itchen

  10. Oh right. I knew it would happen in Southampton Itchen, but Falkirk is clearly due to trade union influence and Jeremy Miles was the favourite for selection in Gower. Odd! They better find him a seat!

  11. With candidates like these, how can things go wrong for Labour: http://www.progressonline.org.uk/2013/05/09/the-frontline-40-alternative-queens-speech/
(Darren Jones hit the nail on the head)

  12. Not surprised in a sense about Falkirk, especially as of the 5 Scottish target seats, only 1 had been deemed AWS (Argyll & Bute)

  13. Alun Pugh won Arfon selection beating Tal Michael. So no husband-wife duo as Labour PPCs in North Wales

  14. Vicky Foxcroft selected in Lewisham Deptford
Paul Miller selected in Preseli Pembrokeshire

  15. What’s going on in Wirral West? Labour were supposed to be selecting on 11th May.

  16. I think it’s scheduled for next weekend now

  17. no, wait, I got it wrong! Wirral West apparently selected today. They chose Margaret Greenwood

  18. Recap of Labour selections between last night and today:

Bermondsey and Old Southwark : Neil Coyle
    Bristol South : Karin Smyth
City of Chester : Christian Matheson
    Manchester Withington : Jeff Smith
    North Warwickshire : Mike O’Brien
    Somerset North East: Todd Foreman
    Weaver Vale : Julia Tickridge

    it was a busy Saturday

  19. It was a busy Saturday and I guessed about 4 out of the 7 correctly. We have some very strong candidates in crucial seats and this has made my day.

  20. Although he got most of the others wrong, credit to Bob for getting North Warwickshire right. I’m surprised O’Brien is standing again. I thought he suffered a heart attack some years ago. It will be a very stressful campaign for him.

  21. Neil Coyle is a Southwark councillor and Deputy Cabinet Member for Welfare
Karin Smyth is a manager at the South Bristol NHS clinical commissioning group.
Christian Matheson is a Unite officer
Jeff Smith is a Manchester councillor and Executive Member for Finance
Mike O’Brien was Labour MP for N Warwickshire between 1992 to 2010
Todd Foreman is a Kensington & Chelsea councillor, as well as a lawyer and teacher. He stood in W Central in 2012 GLA elections
Julia Tickridge is a Chester & W Cheshire councillor who tried to get selected in Bristol NW

  22. I don’t know when Cardiff Central is selecting now, but one of the contenders is Jo Stevens, a local solicitor representing Trade Unions – here is her website:

    http://www.jostevens.co.uk/

  23. Does anyone know whether Labour have decided AWS or Open Shortlists for the following seats:

    Coventry NE
    Bradford E
    Bradford W
    NW Leicestershire

  24. I think they have not taken any decision yet on these 4. Bradford East was considered at a recent NEC meeting and they have decided it required more consultation.

  25. Thanks Andrea. I would expect one of the 2 Bradford seats to be AWS. I amnot sure about Coventry NE – although there are a lot of AWS in the W Midlands, Coventry has 3 male Labour MPs. I would predict AWS for NW Leics.

  26. Another candidate for Cardiff Central is Amina Ali. She has a lot of support from big hitters – two race horse. Looking at what happened in NE Somerset, local candidates don’t always win.

  27. Christine Spriggs was wrongly announced as the winner – but it was Margaret Greenwood. Over-enthusiastic blogger

Its interesting how the shorter campaigns are changing the profile of the recently-selected candidates. Far fewer parachuted SPADDy types after their initial success, and far more local people with union backing

  28. Cardiff North: Mari Williams

    Birmingham Yardley: Jess Philips

Philips is a Cllr in Birmingham. Williams has a CV with all the credentials of the tipycal hopeful in a labour selection contest!

  29. Joshua Fenton-Glynn selected in Calder Valley
Mike Le Surf chosen in South Basildon and East Thurrock

  30. Catherine West got Hornsey & Wood Green.
Stephanie Peacock in Halesown & Rowley Regis (she worked for Sylvia Heal the previous Labour MP for the seat and was previously on the NEC).
James Frith in Bury N (local councillor)

  31. Catherine West hasn’t got Hornsey & Wood Green – as Andrea pointed out in another place, the selection is tomorrow.

The one I am waiting for with interest is Enfield N – will they go with Joan Ryan again?

  32. Peacock has/had an “amiable friendship” with Tom Watson according to the Daily Mail.

Matt, I found the full Enfield North shortlist. I posted it on the relevant thread

Crawley shortlist: Chris Oxlade, Michael Jones,
Sean McKee, Mark Latham and Sohail Munawar.

  33. Thanks Andrea – it is strange how some CLPs never publish the shortlist, and others do.

I was just looking up about Steph Peacock, and it seems there is are quite a few “amiable friendships” within the echelons of Labour:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2191783/David-Camerons-official-spokesperson-plans-labour.html

  34. Dissapointed with Haloswen and Rowley Regis, it is a dodgy stitch-up but inevitable, they should have used their old candidate. That being said, I am really happy for James Frith – really happy, shows that common sense exists in the Labour Party. I expected Simon Young to get Calder Valley but their candidate seem sound. Mike Le Surf seems solid, he is a proper Essex boy unlike the East Ender – Metcalfe, I need to get down there to do some campaigning. I thought Jordan Newell would go for it but Le Surf is good. Mari Williams, I am dunno (she’ll be the next MP for sure) but I expected it to be Sophie Howe she seemed like a solid candidate. Jess Phillips is an impressive selection because I thought Eleanor Smith from UNISON would get the selection, but was she even shortlisted? However sad thing is that Labour is still behind on BAME representation. Worrying.

  35. I have to say, although I am happy with many of the selections, I do wish that the leadership resumes ‘parachuting’ and fixing for their own ends and I say that as someone who used to get angry about it. When Labour returns to government in 2015, there will be a cabal of Unite/leftwing MPs and they will be worse than the ‘Tory Taliban’ that exists on Cameron’s backbenches. They will attack Labour’s deficit reduction strategy, attack his reforms to welfare, attack his reforms to public services, attack his public sector pay freeze or radical zero-budget spending review and instead obsess over Trident and introducing a 50p tax on those earnign £90,000 or something similar. It will be a nightmare, Ed should have used parachuting and open primaries to get quality candidates to meet his aims not McCluskey’s dolls. Labour is heading for a disaster if it carries like this.

  36. Stephanie Peacock has been selected for Halesowen and Rowley Regis.

  37. “I thought Jordan Newell would go for it but Le Surf is good”

the shortlist was Le Surf, John Kent (Thurrock council leader) and Felton Flavius.

  38. Local parties should be allowed to select the candidates they choose. No more parachutes: fortunately Ed doesn’t like them. If a candidate us good they can still win without any foggy business. Also some of the parachuted candidates have turned out to be very ineffective like Luciana Berger and Gloria del PIero

  39. Bob’s made a very good point.

I usually take very little interest in internal disputes within the Labour party, and although I’m no big fan of the practice of parachuting, Ed may be creating big problems for himself in the next Parliament if there is a significant number of left winger in the 2015 intake, especially now that the parties policy positions are moving towards the centre ground.

  40. felton flavius is a stupid name(i’ll probably offend some labour supporters but i don’t mind)

  41. Bob, by left winger do you mean Dennis Skinner types, or just candidates with union backing?

  42. “Ed may be creating big problems for himself in the next Parliament if there is a significant number of left winger in the 2015 intake, especially now that the parties policy positions are moving towards the centre ground.”

The two Eds will most likely be in coalition government.

They will be able to blame the Lib Dems for forcing them to follow centrist policies, just as David Cameron does in answer to his right wing.

  43. Bob – I thought the 2010 Halesowen & Rowley Regis candidate Sue Hayman, pulled out of the selection to support Steph Peacock.

Your comment on BAME selections is interesting – I think 2 on the 3 Brighton Pavilion shortlist are BAME, as are 3 of the 5 on Enfield N shortlist. I think so far only Sarah Owen and Thangam Debbonaire are BAME out of the selections so far.

  44. Sue Hayman didn’t seek the seat of Halesowen and Rowley Regis and as Matt correctly states fully supported Stephanie Peacock.

  45. I think very few of the candidates selected so far would be characterised as ‘hard left’ – we are talking centre-left candidates, as opposed to Blairite right-wingers and supporters of the pressure/entryist group ‘Progress’

  46. Yes – Heaven forbid, Bob, that anyone should get selected who wants to see social progress. Surely the point of a Labour government is to maintain the status quo & not to do anything which is in any way according to the spirit of those who founded the Labour Party.

  47. Oliver Coppard selected for Labour in Sheffield Hallam.

  48. Bob – Stephen Metcale is from Essex not East London.

Barnaby – What is ‘social progress’?

  49. As Labour’s programme in 1973 states, “an irreversible shift in the balance of power towards working people & their families”. Improved living standards, greater control of ordinary people over their own lives. That’s one way of putting it. Since you ask. []

  50. To work out how to accomplish that in a globalised, ultra-competitive world in the middle of a financial crisis that could last for decades would take a political Einstein.

I don’t hold out much hope that Ed Miliband will be able to do it.
