Category: Ultra-safe Labour seat

Geography: Greater London. Part of the Redbridge Council Area.

Main population centres: Ilford.

Profile: This is a densely packed residential seat without the Essex countryside of Ilford North, it is less affluent, the housing less desirable. In many ways it resembles its neighbour East Ham more than Ilford North. Most notably it now has a very large ethnic population, the second highest non-white population in the country and the second highest proportion of Asian voters. Ilford is perhaps still associated with the suburban Essex part of London, but demographic change has since made this seat part of ethnically diverse east London.

Politics: Ilford South was traditionally a true marginal and a good bellwether seat, since 1951 it has been won by the party that went on to form the government in every election except 1992, when it was narrowly gained by Labour. The massive demographic changes here and the Conservative party`s difficulties in appealing to ethnic minority voters though have transformed it into a safe Labour seat.

  1. SDP MPs and members were routinely “sent to Coventry” in the early 80s.

Alan Clark’s diary talks about some kind of civic event in Plymouth where the Labour councillors and trade unionists were happily chatting to Clark, but refused to say a single word to David Owen (the SDP MP for the west of the city), even when he tried to break the ice they gave him the silent treatment.

That seems to be Corbyn’s approach cf the meeting with May and Umunna the other day, but not widely shared by moderate Labour MPs.

Incidentally where do you live now? Sounds like it’s probably Sheffield.

  2. Sam Tarry won Labour selection here

  3. Sorry HH only just seen your response. Yeah it is Sheffield. Moved here 2 years ago. Was renting in Parson Cross but just bought our first house in August

  4. Nice to see that you are doing well. I like Sheffield, probably because I’ve got the steel industry in my blood.

  5. It’s definitely one of the best places I’ve been. Everyone is very friendly and there is so much to do. It’s so close to the peaks. We’re getting married at Wortley Hall next year.

  6. Sam Tarry won Labour selection
