Main population centres: Blandford Forum, Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newton, Verwood.

Profile: A rural seat centred upon the Blackmoor Vale and the chalk hills of Cranborne Chase and stretching from the outskirts of Poole up to the county borders with Somerset and Wiltshire. It is mostly made up of small market towns, with liverstock farming and the food industry still important parts of the local economy. Just east of Blandford Forum is the Blandford Camp military base, home of the Royal Signals.

Politics: A reliable Conservative seat, held by the party since 1950. It had been targeted by the Liberal Democrats and saw the Tory majority cut in 2001 and 2005, but in 2010 the Conservatives managed to achieve a more secure majority..

  1. Full result not in yet but I gather that Labour failed to win the Blandford Central ward by-election last night by only 3 votes – which I find pretty astonishing. This constituency has one of the shallowest Labour traditions even in the West Country (it was won by the Liberals in 1945 and by the Tories ever after). It must be years since there were any Labour councillors here & even then I think it happened once because a Liberal failed to put nomination papers in, though I could have misremembered about that.

  2. Yep Tory gain from the deceased incumbent Independent with Lab short by 3 votes.

    Con 36.6% (+16.6)
    Lab 36.3% (+25.1)
    Lib Dem 27.1% (+0.1)
